Principal Engineer – Electrified Powertrain, Motor Design

Location: Farmington Hills, Michigan USA

Personal Profile and Experience

Do you enjoy working on fast-paced projects, applying your engineering skills to a wide variety of technologies and applications, whilst challenging yourself every day?

In the role of Principal Engineer – Electric motors, you’ll lead the detailed design and prototyping of electric motors. This includes structural and thermal analysis as well as CAD design for a variety of technologies. Design for manufacturing and assembly as well as the definition of virtual validation and physical testing plans is required.

You’ll be operating in a fast paced project environment, needing technical, commercial and customer management skills whilst collaborating with some of the most innovative people, companies, and technologies on the planet. What you will need

You will have:

  • Extensive experience of electrified system mechanical design and/or analysis
  • Demonstrable experience for the key elements of the role and responsibilities outlined above
  • A deep understanding of manufacturing techniques used for electric motors for prototypes and series production
  • Thorough knowledge of state of the art materials and emerging technologies
  • Experience in some of the following analysis: vibration, life and NVH
  • A detailed understanding of HV safety standards and creepage and clearance design rules
  • Worked in a systems engineering environment
  • High standards when creating detailed 2D & 3D CAD models and drawings using best practice geometric tolerances and relevant drawing standards
  • An understanding of market trends and challenges, and applications of existing technology within the industry
  • A track record of innovation
  • Developed a strong technical reputation and relationship with customers and suppliers

Desirable:

  • 1D and 3D thermal analysis including CFD or SPH
  • Understanding of the electromagnetic design and analysis of electric motors and casing design

Key Responsibilities

You will be:

  • Utilising state of the art simulation techniques and design tools to design, develop and prototype electric drive systems
  • Developing new methods to solve industry problems, generating market leading solutions
  • Responsible for the delivery of technical work packages and whole projects
  • Leading by example implementing DSD’s technical processes to ensure it is executed to the highest quality when developing others in standards of drawings and technical reporting
  • Managing multi person/cross functional projects to achieve budgeted margin and maintain an excellent relationship with customers, whilst being accountable to the operations board for their outcome
  • Developing and maintaining strategic relationships on behalf of the function with key account responsibilities to maintain and build revenue streams in your sector
  • Taking an active role in the professional development of others within the function
  • An active stake holder in the Electrified Powertrain functions quality system, generating and developing technical and procedural capabilities and ensuring their continuous development
  • Marketing DSD through technical and commercial forums, conferences and white papers
  • Managing challenging proposals and quotes that define the strategy of the project while mitigating technical and commercial risks
